Igarra, headquarters Akoko-Edo local government area was under siege on Tuesday evening as dare devil robbers raided two banks and killed five persons including policemen.

It was a reminiscence of the 2013 armed robbery attack on Auchi, headquarters of Estako West local government area of the state where two soldiers and several civilians were killed.

The Nation gathered that the robbers who stormed Igarra with several vehicles first attacked the police station in the area where they killed a policeman and looted its armoury.
While the attack on the police station was going on, other members of the gang attacked the two banks where they killed a policeman and three civilians.
Several persons who were injured in the attack are receiving treatment at a hospital in the area.

An eyewitness told our correspondent on phone that the robbers killed a guard and started shooting civilians after ransacking the bank and attacking policemen at the police station.
He said many persons are receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Another witness said the robbers were heavily armed and engaged the police in a shoot-out.
It was learnt that policemen who took cover in the bush came out when an armoured personnel carrier was brought to the robbery scene.

Local vigilante groups reportedly joined in the shoot-out and blocked all routes to Igarra town which made the robbers to abandon the vehicles used for the operation.
One of the robbers that participated in the attack was arrested, while another was shot dead.
Items recovered from the robbers included N4.4m cash, 11 AK47 rifles, 41 AK47 magazines, three T06 rifles, two vehicles, 21 unexploded bombs, 46 T06 live ammunition, seven mobile phones and seven exploded bomb cans.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, who visited the community on Wednesday praised his men for putting up a strong resistance.
