The Federal Government has said that the implementation of the N500 billion Social Intervention Programmes provided for in the 2016 budget will commence fully in 2017.

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, stated this at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday during the public presentation of the 2017 budget proposals. The minister explained that 2016 was a year of “extensive” planning for the social intervention programmes

He stated: “2016 was a year of planning. Extensive planning has gone into it. In 2017, you will see full implementation and that is why the same fund is allocated. Once the budget is passed, the rollout will happen.”

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said the Social Intervention Plan had not performed fairly well.

She expressed optimism that the problems encountered by the programme would be addressed in the 2017 budget.
