Manchester United have had a £36m bid for Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto rejected and Chelsea could soon join the race for the midfielder, according to reports in Spain.

Mundo Deportivo report that despite the interest from two of the Premier League’s major clubs, Barcelona have absolutely no intention of selling the 25-year-old.

He is an academy product and a first-team regular last season, making 48 appearances in all competitions and scoring twice.

Chelsea are believed to be pursuing cover in central midfield after selling Nemanja Matic to United for £40m.

They have drawn up a shortlist of prospective targets, with Leicester’s Danny Drinkwater also under consideration.

As for United, Jose Mourinho is looking to bolster his options before the Premier League season begins for them on Sunday against West Ham.

United are in Macedonia for the Super Cup, where they play Real Madrid later today.

Aside from Matic, Mourinho has also signed defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica and striker Romelu Lukaku from Everton.
